Sensei Cathy Rieck
1st degree black belt and head instructor of the Women's Self Defense program.
I started karate in September of 1997 and recieved my shodan December 2002.
Hmmm, a little about myself.....well, I started karate during my 3rd year of university and became interested after a summer trip down to San Francisco to visit a cousin. She was in karate and had shown me some videos of her katas and tournaments. I had always been interested in trying a martial art, kickoxing, or boxing, something physical like that, when I was growing up but never really tried in part because I was not a very physically big or strong person. After watching her vidoes I decided that if she could do it I could do it too.
So when I was back at university I looked into the martial arts club and decided to check out, at that time, the UAK karate club on campus. Other than recieving my shodan, I'd have to say one of my proudest moments was just having the courage to try something totally new and foreign to me all by myself. After the first class I was hooked.
The physical conditioning, training, katas, and kumite were all so new and exciting to me. It wasn't long before I saw the results of the training. I felt stronger and more confident about myself. And beneath all the discipline, sweat, aches and pains from the rigourous training I also saw the beauty and art of karate. Every movement whether in a kata or sparring, there was not only force but grace.
Over the past ten years, karate has really been one of the main constants in my life. Being a very competetive person and with a strong passion for learning new things, karate has definitely provided me with challenges both physical and mental and continues to push me to grow and learn new things. It has truly shaped me to who I am today and hopefully continues to for the next 10 years to come.
